English Jurisdiction Map 1851

One of my main early difficulties was establishing exactly where the place was in terms of records. This is an extremely useful map as it shows all the different types of district in a chosen area. This is invaluable when searching for the records of a particular place.

Jurisdictions
Place:    Eccleshall
County:    Staffordshire
Civil Registration District:    Stone
Probate Court:    Court of the Peculiar of Eccleshall
Diocese:    Lichfield

Over time the Registration District varies between Newport Shropshire, Stone Staffordshire or Stoke Staffordshire.

Tithe Maps

In 1836, the Tithe Commutation Act was passed, which provided for the commutation of tithe payments in kind to money payments, known as tithe rent charges or corn rents, based on the national price of certain quantities of grain over a seven year period. The records consist of the 1837 series of tithe maps and their accompanying apportionments.  These give a vivid snapshot of life at that time.

The maps and schedules are now held in the National Archives (classes IR29 and IR30). It is possible to view the maps and search the apportionments on The Genealogist website.
